The Psychosis of Schizophrenia

For example, many scientists argue that the disorder runs in families. It is estimates that people with a family history of schizophrenia or a child who has schizophrenic parent, has a 10 percent higher chance of developing the disorder then someone who does not. Nonetheless, there has been no specific gene within genetic factors that is shown to cause schizophrenia (Carey, Benedict 916). Another theory about the cause of schizophrenia are the idea that those who have schizophrenia have a different brain structure then those who do not, and that they have higher levels of dopamine in their brain (Carey, Benedict 916). Dopamine creates a sense of well being, but has deficiency in some brain area (Shier, David, Butler, Jackie, Lewis 380). In addition, in recent years researches have discovered that a rare genetic mutation possessed by only those who are schizophrenic, may be the cause of the disorder, but no mutation is known for sure (Carey, Benedict 916). Moreover, a common misconception of schizophrenics is that they are violent and commit violent crimes. Nevertheless, most people affected by the disorder are more afraid of other people than aggressive toward them ("Unknown: Schizophrenia." 914). Another misconception assumed about schizophrenics is that they all abuse drugs and alcohol. Though some schizophrenics do abuse drugs and alcohol, the role of drug and alcohol abuse in schizophrenia is extremely complicated. The schizophrenia itself does not cause alcohol or drug abuse but those who are schizophrenic are more likely to abuse these substances. Some schizophrenics do abuse alcohol and drugs as a way to cope with their symptoms and illness (Carey, Benedict 914). However, by abusing these substances, it makes it much harder for schizophrenia to be properly treated. For example, drugs like marijuana, or cocaine can make the symptoms of schizophrenia worse and can cause users to become apathetic, making them less likely to follow their treatment plans.
