Bat Boy

The detail in the floor and the walls, and the careful attention to the genuinely run-down feel of the town was the center piece of the set design. The use of grays and deep browns provided a very realistic tone to the town of Hope Falls. The versatility of the stage also allowed Mr. McClaran the ability to maneuver from one realistic scene to the next without much of a seam. .
The lights that Mike Garner has set up to illuminate the story of Bat Boy for the most part seemed to support the realistic tone. The major difference in the lighting that conflicted the tone of the setting was the use of the spot light. All of a sudden the audience was jolted out of their realistic moods and forced into realizing that this was just simply a presentation of a story. The emersion that was provided through the story up to these select moments was completely destroyed. In one second, the audience transforms from a group of people following the story of Edgar and getting a glimpse into this extraordinary boy's story, to a group of people wonder who the spot operator is, and "why is that light so bright?" .
The other conflicting element of the show was the sound design. According to the program, Bat Boy had no actual sound designer. Typically in a case like this, the musical director would assume all responsibilities for a sound design. In assuming this was the case, Terry Dobson's design was not exactly the easiest thing to listen to. The musicians were very much over-powering the actors, and the audience was straining to hear even the actors closest to them. When asked why microphones were not used, Dobson replied "Because we have never used microphones at Theatre Three." The musical score that Farley and Flemming have constructed is a beautiful and unique thing, but when it is the only thing the audience can hear, Laurence O"Keefe's lyrics are completely lost. This also forces actor to push beyond their typical means.
