Overview of Pearl Harbor

As the date of the attack approached Japanese attack fleet of thirty three warships; auxiliary craft, and six aircraft carries sailed from northern Japan headed for the Hawaiian Islands on November 26, 1941. Japanese then then had finally reached their ideal launch position; 230 miles from the entrance of Pearl Harbor. Then later five midget submarines carrying two men and two torpedoes were launched to enter the Harbor before the air strike then remain submerged until the attack was made. Once the attack was made they would then make as much damage as possible. .
On the calm morning of December 7, 1941 before the attack the some 185 vessels of the United States Pacific fleet floated calmly in the Harbor in O'ahu, Hawaii. At 6:40 crew on the vessel, USS Ward noticed a conning tower of what would be a midget submarine that was coming in the direction of the Pearl Harbor entrance. Crew on board sank the sub with gunfire and depth charges and sent radioed information to headquarters. Then later at 7 a.m. at Opana Mobile Radar Station several different signals were picked up. The signals indicate that a large flight of planes were approaching from the north. Officials thought it to be either an expected group of B-17s from the mainland or an aircraft flying in from the carrier Enterprise but no concerned actions were made. .
At 7:55 devastation and destruction began in the Harbor. Cmdr. Mitsuo Fuchina sent coded messages "Tora, Tora, Tora " that meant the complete surprise was made. The coded message has a deeper meaning than surprise, "to " means charge and "tora " itself means tiger. People who were able to see the low flying planes thought it was just a training exercise. Once action were made though they knew this was not an exercise. An American then quickly sent an alert: "Air raid Pearl Harbor this is no drill! " At 8:06 it is approximated that the USS Arizona exploded after being hit in the deck by a bomb averaging about 1760 pounds.
