Film Review - Cinema Paradiso

This is the movie that sparked my interest in filmmaking and why I started making short films myself. When I watched it four years ago I didn't have the technical knowledge about shots, editing, lighting, cinematography and film in general as I do now. So when I watch it now I gain a greater understanding of the films motives and goals in inspiring the audience and why it is such a beautiful movie. .
I believe that Cinema Paradiso embodies everything that film should be. It is one of those movies where every time you watch it you learn something new or discover something you haven't before about it. Giuseppe captivates your attention and creates an entire film that doesn't just seem like a bunch of scenes piled together. He does so by using a huge variety of shot types with astounding cinematography. He does a great job of bringing the characters to life in a beautiful aesthetically pleasing way. For example there are many dolly shots in the film in the streets and in Cinema Paradiso. Which work especially well in the scene where Toto is told by Alfredo to leave Giancaldo. While there are many dolly shots there are also many stationary tripod shots that are beautiful and give a pleasing look to the eye. Another type of shot used often is the low angle shot for example most of the front facing shots of people inside Cinema Paradiso are low angles which make the subject appear bigger than it actually is which in my opinion I believe the directors were attempting to portray how happy the cinema was making all the people in attendance. And also everything in the movie feels so authentic from the costumes to makeup. In Vincent Canby's review he states that the movie does a great job portraying the Italian culture at that time (Canby). I agree with this completely and to add to this even further my Grandmother who is Italian after watching the film really felt like they showed what Italian life was like very well during that time period.
