The Branding of Detroit


It seems that there is a sector of residents in the city who believe that this progress is not aimed at them and that they are being driven out. Their thought is that because of these upscale boutiques and new residential developments that their city is being taken away from them. I say, given the recent history of this once thriving metropolis, Detroiters should welcome anyone who is willing to invest in the comeback of the city of Detroit.
             This city was once dubbed the "Paris of the Midwest " because of its Parisian styled tree-lined boulevards. This is just one of the many branding type monikers that city has used over the course of its 313 (Also the area code) year history. Here are just a few of the branding names that city has used at one time or another:.
             Motor City- This goes without saying. The cities dependence on the industry that made its home here in the early 1900's when Henry Ford established the Ford Motor Company here.
             Arsenal of Democracy- Detroit was vital to the war efforts in WWII. Because of the manufacturing infrastructure that was already established here due to the automobile industry, it was an easy transition to build military supplies.
             City of Champions " This title was give to Detroit in 1935 due to the success of the sports franchises at the time. All three professional teams (Lions, Red Wings and Tigers) won their first worl championship in their respective sports.
             Birthplace of the Middle Class- Because of the success of the automobile industry that was a great migration of southern workers who came to the area because of employment opportunities and the wages and benefits that were being paid to workers.
             Motown (Hitsville USA)- The home to one of the most popular music traditions in modern history. The Motown sound and artists are renowned world- wide and the studio on West Grand Boulevard still exists today.
             Hockeytown- Nickname of the town due to the popularity of the NHL's Detroit Redwings.
