The Italian Family

If families do not live next door or in the same neighborhood, they will visit each other often and phone daily. The mother-son relationship is the most prominent of all relationships in the family. Mothers baby their sons to no end and would do anything at all to defend them if they ever get into trouble. It is somewhat ironic that the daughter is considered the more independent child in the family; however, men continue to prevail in the workforce. .
The increasing importance of the role of woman in Italy is a large factor in how families function today. In 1962 there was a higher attendance of females to colleges, which gave women the chance to receive a degree and find a job. Women at this time had much more freedom occupationally and in family life. Increases in the cost of living made it possible if not necessary for many women to get jobs. Many of these women, if not all, came from a generation of the father making the money while the females stayed at home to cook, clean, and take care of the younger children. Since many families now can not live on one income alone, females have an opportunity to enter the work force. Another factor around this time was the feminist movement, which spawned mainly from the student movement in the 1960's. Before World War II only 2.1% of women were in school, in 2003 the number has risen to over 50%. No longer were women content with sitting home all day cooking, cleaning, and looking after their children. Women wanted the opportunity to hold jobs and have the freedom to leave the house without their husband's permission. Today, although the female is still expected to do most of the household chores, she is also accepted in the working world. Because of this, however, she delays having children and therefore has less. .
Another dramatic change in Italian culture is the rapidly declining birthrate. Overall, Italian families are having less and less children, and are therefore the population is becoming older rather than remaining balanced.
