The True Meaning of "Good"

Come to find out, The Grandmother later remembered that the house she was thinking of wasn't even in the state the family was driving in. What is really surprising for a "lady " like her is that when the Misfit began killing off her family, she didn't even ask him to spare her grandchildren, their mother, or her own son. She was only thinking of herself. The Misfit is a complex character. Little is known about him except that he is a serial killer. His murderous backstory is hinted at: "I never was a bad boy that I remember of, but somewhere along the line I done something wrong and got sent to the penitentiary. I was buried alive It was a head-doctor at the penitentiary said what I had done was kill my Daddy but I known that for a lie. " It is never confirmed how many the Misfit has killed, but it can be assumed that it's many. The irony in his situation is that he believes that what he's doing is right. He knows he is bad but seems to accept it and knows that there are worse men out there: "Nome, I ain't a good man, but I ain't the worst in the world neither. " He also questions a lot about religion. As the Grandmother keeps telling him about Jesus and to pray, he connects that all back to his life. He even compares himself to Jesus: "Jesus shown everything off balance. It was the same case with Him as with me except He hadn't committed any crime and they could prove I had committed one because they had papers on me. " His resolution towards the end of the story was that: "Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead, and He shouldn't have done it. He shown everything off balance. If He did what He said, then it's nothing for you to do but throw away everything and follow Him, and if he didn't, then it's nothing for you to do but enjoy the few minutes you got left the best way you can by killing somebody or burning down his house or doing some other meanness to him. No pleasure but meanness.
