Jack Finney wrote a very interesting short story named "Of Missing Persons" and for an assignment a college student named J.D. Marlow made a short movie based on the story that he called Escape to Verna. The principal character in both is a distraught man named Charley Ewell, who experiences very little trust in himself. We do not know in the beginning, though of how little faith he has in himself. We learn that through watching the movie and reading the story and creating the interpretation. The movie and the story are standardized in that they express that he holds little faith, but in the film, there is the dispute that shows that he is very dependent on his mother and others. .
In the story Charley is a human being that wants to get away from his lifetime because it appears that he is really distressed with his lack of faith. He feels that if he was to survive somewhere else and start something new he will amend his life. The very beginning of the story shows that everything had already encountered and he was not able to break loose because of his want of faith. The movie also shows that he is distressed with his life. In the story it states, "Walk in as though it were the ordinary agency it seems you can find it, somewhere, in any city you try! Ask a few ordinary questions about a trip you're planning, a vacation, anything you like. Then hint about The Folder a little, but don't mention it directly. Give him time to size you up and offer it himself. And if he does, if you're the type, if you can believe then make up your mind and stick to it! Because you won't ever get a second chance. I know, because I've tried. And tried. And tried." This expresses that he has come to terms in the fact that he can only change things for himself. He cannot escape. He is in a very dingy apartment, has just lost his job, and does not appear to have any friends or anyone in his life. He has photos on his walls and in a film frame that are of places that he would wish to go to and no depictions of family or friends.
