Being Gay in a Changing Word

Being gay I was wondering how I ever get labeled with this word. Then I thought how the meaning of the word gay has change from the 1900's to now. In the early to mid-1900's gay use to mean someone who was happy, and cheerful. In the 1980's it started to mean someone who was attracted to the opposite sex. In the mid to late 2000 it started to mean something that is lame. Kids would use such words as "that's gay" never meaning that something is actually homosexual but something that is lame or stupid. The word gay's meaning has changed so many times from its origin to now just like any other word. .
The dictionaries state the word gay as following: sexually attracted to someone who is the same sex; of relating to, or used by homosexuals; happy and excited; cheerful and lively. So according to the dictionary someone who is gay can be happy, excited, and cheerful. In the 1950's Midol ran an ad campaign that used the words "Betty's Gay with Midol" meaning that Betty is happy with Midol. Fast forward to 2010 the only ad campaigns using the word gay are for same sex marriage equality. But do we use the word gay for people who are attracted to the same sexes because they happy or because the word just got attached with hat meaning?.
Many ad campaigns in the 1950's wanted to sell their products as being good and something you should buy. They wanted to show off their company as being something good, bright, and cheerful. Many ads ran in the 1950's used the word gay. Such ads include Midol "Betty's Gay with Midol". Even Disneyland used it to help attract people to its theme park and rides; "A Gay Whirl at Disneyland." They used the word gay as it was originally intended to. They used one of the first meanings of the word, to be happy. Now in 2000's and 2010's we no longer use the word gay to help sell things. We now use the word gay to mean someone who is attracted to the same sex.
