The Economy and the Environment

The whole process is done once the rock achieves equilibrium. Hydraulic fracturing makes it possible to produce natural gas, extracted within the shale oil. These minerals were previously unreachable by conventional methods of mining, till fracking was introduced. The name 'fracking' is a term used as the shorthand form of hydraulic fracturing. It is referred to as the process via which the rocks are fractured apart by high pressure mixture. It is referred to, by experts, as a "frac unit" or a "frac job." With studying the history and current epidemic of fracking lead me to the conclusion that this practice should be avoided. .
Hydraulic fracturing has experienced approximately 150 years of development. It was firstly experience in the 1860s, whereby liquids were initially manipulated to stimulate the shallow and hard rock wells. It was performed in wells around New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky. In the 1930s, there were trials to inject non-explosive fluids into the ground, to stimulate wells. Extractors often used acid, which created scrapes along the surfaces of fractures to allow more oil and gas to escape via the surface. Hydraulic fracturing was introduced in 1947 by Stanolind Oil. It was performed via injection of 1,000 gallons of palm-oil and a powerful acid. The process was followed by injection of a gel breaker that stimulated gases to produce limestone at 2,400 feet. As stated by Brain Merchant, a senior editor at the widely renown media outlet Motherboard, "It was first discovered as an experimental practice and later on came into commercial use in 1949 by Halliburton Company" (Merchant, 2014). The technology applied, then has a minimum resemblance to the contemporary hydraulic fracturing procedures. The drilling procedures could not apply equal amounts of pressure to the magnitudes and pressures used currently. Therefore, it limited the natural gas extraction to only that which was present in the loose geological formations.
