Thomas Alva Edison


            Thomas Alva Edison is the brightest and is perhaps one of America's greatest inventors. His inventions have helped shape the world into what it is today. A total of 1,093 inventions were created in his extensive lifetime. Some of his great inventions include that of the phonograph, electric light bulb, storage battery, kinetoscope, and many others. Among these, the kinetoscope played a critical role in the upbringing of American cinema. Edison even created his own motion picture business which in the long run, created the foundation for today's entertainment industry. .
             The Panic of 1893 overwhelmed banks and investors all over the country. It took a full decade to recover from its financial instability. It also affected Edison, who was forced to lay off over two hundred workers at the Edison Phonograph Works. The good news was that Edison discovered a new, profitable field of interest that same year --the motion picture business. (Edison Motion Pictures).
             Edison was the first to develop a commercial motion picture machine in the late 1880s. As luck would have it, he was primarily interested in increasing the value of the phonograph by bonding it with a set of projected photos. This means he added a set of photos to accompany the music so the audience could make the most out of their movie-going experience. (Edison's Kin).
             Edison assigned the task to William Dickson, a young man working in the West Orange facility. Dickson first placed pictures on a rotating cylinder as a basic projection .

             device. This did not prove successful until he stumbled upon the use of celluloid film. Dickson added perforations to the edge of the strip of film in order to allow it to pass through a projection device. This breakthrough allowed for the development of the first motion picture camera and projector. (Edison Motion).
             After Dickson developed the basic technology, Edison worked with him to perfect the sound reproduction and image quality.
