"I've always been misunderstood because of how I look. Don't judge me by the cover ˜cause I'm a real good book." These strong words were sang by a feisty female country artist by the name of Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton was one of the few early country female artist that had a strong standing in the male dominated country music industry. During the rising years of country and folk music, males were the stars of the show. Females were viewed to have no place in this specific music genre. However, throughout the growing years of country and folk music, female artists rightfully gained their place in music. The reason females did gain their place was because they put themselves out in a rough and tough industry. Their dedication is what pushed them and got them to a successful place. The realness women added to country music that men seemed to lack. Women have continually proven to have a place in the country music industry. .
Over the course of first thirty years, country music was viewed as being more masculine and to much of a "manly" western theme for women to sing. However in 1935, a woman from Arkansas changed those "manly " views right around. A singer and fiddler, Patsy Montana, broke into the country music scene with a song named, "I Want to be a Cowboys Sweetheart". This record officially became the first song done by a female artist to sell a million records. Patsy's yoedling and western themes quickly grew and became well known across the country music world. Although Patsy Montana never became as huge of a star compared to male artists at the time, she became a role model for the women of country music that was to come. .
With Patsy Montana putting her name and songs out in the public, to be torn apart was a huge step in the right direction. This was a major reason why woman succeeded in becoming popular. They were never afraid to put themselves out in the public eye to get negative and positive feedback in order to improve and get noticed.
