             Never before until now, that substance abuse treatment has such a strong body of knowledge existed regarding "what works in prevention. However, even with all the existing knowledge, much of what we know works in substance abuse prevention is not being applied. Furthermore, what we know doesn't work is still being implemented in communities across the nation. More so, information regarding about what works and what doesn't work has been gained from the efforts of researchers alone. Much of what researchers know what comes only after numerous trails in the field. .
             What are the definitions of use, misuse, abuse, and dependence/ addiction?.
             "Substance use" is defined as the ingestion of alcohol or other drugs without the experience of any negative consequences. "Substance misuse" on the other hand is when person experiences negative consequences from the use of alcohol or other drugs, or the use of the substances are illegal. "Substance abuse" is defined as the continued use of alcohol or other drugs in spite of negative consequences. Lastly, "Addiction/ dependence are the compulsive use of alcohol or other drugs regardless of the consequences. .
             What does A.T.O.D stands for what are the treatments?.
             The ATOD is an acronym for Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The prevention field has had the burden of explaining why some highly publicized, widespread prevention programs have failed to demonstrate an impact on the ATOD use patterns of youths. There were two interesting terms. The New Jersey Household Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003) give explanation of both terms Treatment need and Formal treatment, "Treatment need – is a person that is classified as having a need for treatment simply if they met the criteria for abuse of, or dependence on, alcohol or drugs within the last 12 months.
