Research Paper - The Works of Mark Twain

Henry reassured her that he would run away and look for her. Rachel was soon bought as a cook, but the union invaded where she was staying but left Rachel behind. Soon the colonists took over and Rachel became their cook. The colonists were more of the party type, so they always held dances and get together. At one of the get togethers Henry showed up, but it has been so long since Rachel has seen him that she didn't recognize him. The next day, Rachel walked into the kitchen only to find Henry standing in her path. That is where Rachel ended her explanation to Misto C of why she was so joyful and how she experienced plenty of trouble in her past. She closed their conversation by saying, "Oh, no, Misto C, I hadn't no trouble. An' no joy!" (Twain, "A True Story").
According to Piancentio, ED "A True Story" was written to help gain respect for the dialect used in that time period. I agree. Piancentio, ED also stated that during that time period the story was in, the prominent mindset of white Americans was that African Americans were inferior to them. That, in my opinion, is true as well. White Americans made fun of the dialect and felt as if they should be treated better, but why should they make fun of them when they are the ones who are restraining them from an education in the first place. Also the critic stated that dialect and slavery were not the only reasons this story was written. It also brings forth emotion. It shows examples of inhumanity, and it is a big eye opener. .
Twain exerts humor into many of his works as well. "The £1,000,000 Bank Note" is a prime example of how his humor reflects in what he writes. This story begins by telling about a twenty seven year old man named Henry. Henry was a mining-brokers clerk in San Francisco. He has no wife, no children, and no family to support him. On the little free time he did have, he liked sailing.
