Claudius says, "Hamlet, this deed, for thine especial safety "Which we do tender as we dearly grieve For that which thou hast done "must send thee henceWith fiery quickness. Therefore prepare thyself. The bark is ready and the wind at help,Th' associates tend, and everything is bentFor England. "( act 4, scene 2, 40-47). Claudius says he is sending Hamlet away for " his own protection ", but where really he is planning his death. Hamlet , confused and uncertain about him self agrees upon going to England with out denying it, where he too learns about his self. Both characters have departed successfully, and are soon faced with test and trials , which they must over come for a better self understanding.
Secondly, Hagar and Hamlets initiation play a big role in understanding themselves. Hagar on her journey has to overcome many obstacles that help her in understanding herself. While she is at Shadow Point , Hagar falls, with no one being around to help her, and becomes "stuck like an overturned ladybug I hurt all over, but the worst is that I'm helpless. I grow enraged . Perhaps the anger gives me strength . Proud as Napoleon or Lucifer, I stand and survey the wasteland I've conquered. My bowel's knot, That's the indignity of it" (191). Even in victory, she is unable to maintain her pride and dignity. This is one of many examples where Hagar's pride has gotten in her way and concealed the "real Hagar ". Her pride has made her doubly blind, just like the real Stone Angel. Another example is shown through her flash backs, when she has to get over beloved son, john's death. She learns that she wasn't able to comfort johon when he was dying . " but before I could speak or move , he laughed, a low harsh laugh that increased his pain. " No " he said distinctly . " you cant, can you? Never mind . Never mind. " He pud a hand on mine , as though he were momentarily caught up in an attempt to comfort me for something that couldn't be helped.
