Technology and the Education System

Within the article, a study was presented from Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization that advises parents of media use by their children, on how much time a student spends on technology. The research showed "that media use among children and teenagers ages 8 to 18 has grown so fast that they on average spend twice as much time with screens each year as they spend in school. " That's less time learning the important things for their future, and more time playing games or losing focus. This greatly hurts their development in the most critical areas of learning, like reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. .
The easier access to the Internet can lead to problems such as cheating by using someone else's work or using their technological device to cheat during a major quiz, test, or exam. Students can store notes and look them up or use the internet during the process of taking one of these, hindering a students ability to rely on their own mind to produce the answer for them. Losing focus is also another problem. While there is no long-term study on whether or not technology has changed a students attention span, there is, however, a huge amount of indirect evidence on how it can directly affect the development of the brain due to the rapid shifts of attention in which technology ensues. Out of the many teachers surveyed by Common Sense Media, nearly 90 percent said "that digital technologies were creating "an easily distracted generation with short attention spans. " Losing focus can directly relate to a student not being able to fully grasp a subject, so they return back to relying on the Internet to provide them with the answers they seek. .
Through an excessive usage of online chatting and shortcuts, the writing skills of today's students have declined tremendously. These days, they are relying more and more on digital communication to provide the necessary writing skills they need.
