Texas is ranked the 42nd in registration of voters and 44th state in the number of people discussing politics or contacting public officials. The low civic participation and voters turnout in Texas can be explained with the following factors. Firstly, the two-party system dynamics contribute to it, since citizens can be unable to understand the differences between the candidates from the opposite parties concerning the issues, particularly when the candidates converge to the middle of the political spectrum. Unlike in swing states, where the turnout of voters is higher, in Taxes the complete control is gained by the Republicans, Democrats also controlling it for a century a decade ago("The two-party system," 2013).What is more, citizens are prone not to vote when there is an obvious domination of one of the candidates. Thus, in Texas even when there was an attempt from the third parties to transform the political landscape that could hardly change the voting turnout. Secondly, when voters have not to elect any candidate, but have to approve some constitutional amendments, they last often appear too complicated for them to make the objective decision. Thus the citizens prefer not to vote(Rangel, 2013). Thirdly, there is such tendency that the citizens become fed up with political issues, perceiving to refuse from voting as the best option. Finally, the information and transactions costs also make barriers to voting. .
What could be done to increase participation in elections?.
There are a number of factors that should be taken into account concerning the issue of increasing the voters turnout. Making the voter registration and state voting rules easier will increase the voters turnout. Thus, automatic voter registration can be an option worth considering. Also, the information concerning the candidates should be as clearly articulated und understandable for citizens to make their final decisions.
