Social Unawareness

A study shows that from the number of text messages sent monthly in the U.S. exploded from fourteen billion in 2000 to one hundred and eighteen billion in 2010, according to a Pew Institute survey [Jef12]. Proving more so of this underwhelming popularity of text messaging, Americans between ages of 18-29 send and receive an average of nearly eighty eight text messages per day, compared to seventeen phone calls [Jef12]. These studies show the high usage of text messaging, and the lack of actual talking taking place. Moving on from teenagers to entrepreneurs for business companies, the use of social media to enhance a company's reputation has also become a new norm. .
This study has asked entrepreneurs to surface twitter and find what the website has to offer, and also what they can make out of what is available to them, to enhance their business. While interaction with the consumers of the company is important, most of the informants stated twitter to be a waste of time (Fischer, Eileen, Reuber). This is a result of the "effectual churn", defined as the continuous looping between social interaction through Twitter and the reassessment of means and effects achievable, without progression (Fischer, Eileen, Reuber). This cycling may be unproductive from the perspective of the entrepreneur's business. Thus proving twitter to be a distraction, like any other form of social media, even in the workplace. .
Social media is becoming a necessity at the workplace, school, university – it is almost uncommon not too see the vibrant colors of Facebook or twitter wherever you go. A disturbing factor about this is not only the distraction it is causing, but also the short attention deficit it is causing people to have [Kra14]. High school students have reported that social media is one of the reasons behind the downfall of their grades, or a main source of procrastination, which ultimately results in being unproductive [Kra14].
