The Untenable Justifications of Imperialism

As recorded in the book "Mark Them with Your Dead! ": The Scramble for Global Empire ", The French prime minister, Jules Ferry, justified imperialism as an important tool to boom French economy, "in the area of economics the consideration which justify a policy of colonial expansion from the point of view that need, I felt more and more strongly by the industrial populations of Europe and particularly those of our won rich and hard working country: the need for export markets " (147). Ferry implied that imperialism was necessary for the French economy not only because of natural resources in those colonies but also to export goods to enrich their own nation. Also, his tone seemed very excited to seize imperialism as a glory for the French nation. This connection between imperialism and nation glory showed how European portrayed their nationalism in the 1800s. In the same time period, there was a very popular theory that related to the "internal camp ": the "Social Darwinism ". The theory held that only the strongest and finest people could survive, and the weaker people would be reasonable to be taken over. In the same book, An American clergyman Josiah Strong expressed his support on "Social Darwinism ", "what if it should be God's plan to people the world with better and finer material? Certain it is, there is a tremendous overbearing surge of power in the Christian nations, which is, if the others are not speedily raised to some vastly higher capacity, will inevitably submerge and bury them forever " (137). Strong justified "imperialism " as almost a common sense, because stronger races, such as those in Christian nations, were supposed to take over inferior races, such as those in Africa. Using this theory, imperialists also justified themselves by saying if their home nations wanted to survive the competition among European countries, they had to thrive through imperialism.
