My Experience in Professional English

Back in my beloved nineties there were plenty of video games developed for MS-DOS operating system so whether you wanted to shoot some alien spaceships or descend into depths of ocean where massive monsters lurk, you had to learn some basic console commands at least to launch the game. The nineties also didn't care for translating any content that held interest to me. "Saving", "loading", "password" and "options" were among some of the concepts that I learned in English before I even had an idea what it meant in Latvian. .
Now when I look back at it, I honestly think that video games might actually be the greatest English teacher I have ever had both related to computers/IT and overall. Of course the first ones were more about learning game mechanics and simple workarounds rather then some complicated computer terms in a foreign language. But slowly my interests broadened and my interaction with this media form became less basic. I simply could not let the immersive story of action game "Max Payne" full of Norse mythology references and film noir melancholic aura to blow over my head just because I didn't understand the language the game was delivered in. I had to learn. I could not let the AI opponent beat me in turn-based strategy game series "Civilization" just because I couldn't read the in-game advisory system which explained how you should properly play it like a veteran. I had to learn. As a matter of fact "Civilization" series helped me much more than just get the highest score in games hall of fame. The series revolving around leading a real historical nation from the stone age to nuclear fusion taught me about the history of many different civilizations, their leaders, great architectural wonders both ancient and modern, our technological advancements and how they came to be, religions and traditions in different lands, government types throughout history and a lot more.
