Questions on Situational Ethics

.
             Question 2.
Is healthcare a right or a privilege? Why?.
             .
Employment, education, and race are important factors in person's ability to acquire healthcare. Research tells us that those in low social economic status are of poor health (Fox, Morford, Fine, & Gibbons, 2004, p. 1169). According to Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), an argument can be made that an unwritten covenant exists between members of society to provide security or well-being for one another. Since the people are the government, the covenant may exist between the members of society and the government as to the provision of access to healthcare. Hobbes believed in natural laws which included that man should seek peace and defend one's self. In regards to health care, seeking peace and defending one's self can be established in negotiations and taking advantage of the voting process to gain the right to health care by all. I consider access to healthcare to be a right, not a privilege. The ability to receive health care should not be based on your social economic status or race. .
I support The Affordable Care Act (ACA) because it assists in eliminating the restrictions of social economic status by allowing everyone to obtain heath care coverage at average community rates. It gives those people who lack education, employment, and minorities' access to healthcare. For several years, I have heard reports on the news that the obesity rates in the United States are rising and that the increase of these rates are becoming an economic burden on society. Variables that are consistent in the obese population, poor social economic status and lack of healthcare. If the obese population would receive healthcare and are educated by medical professionals, these people would live a healthier lifestyle. As a result, United States' obesity rates and economic strain would decrease. Everyone in society has worth, not based on education, socioeconomic status, or race.
