Being bilingual also provides people with more opportunities such as job and educational opportunities. As a bilingual who is fluent in both Chinese and English, I had opportunities through education. I had a choice to study abroad in the United States for better education which most of my cousins cannot even imagine going to a place where most of the people speak a language that they do not understand. For Marin, her achievements that changed her life and the lives of the Chicanos came from the opportunity that she worked as a liaison between the Mexican-American Student Organization and the University of Arizona. Since she is a Chicano, she could help to represent all other Chicanos and get the voices of the Chicanos heard. If she did not know about Spanish culture and even the language, she would not get the trust of the Chicanos and the opportunity to work for a change in the Chicano Community. Also, in the 21st century, the world is more globalized and many companies are searching for employees who speak different languages in order to communicate with customers and clients from different places of the world. Therefore, there are more job opportunities for bilinguals than monolinguals.
Bilingualism can help opening a door for bilinguals to learn about other cultures, which results in enriching one's life. Knowing a second language is a tool to learn about a diverse culture, tradition, and even be a part of it. One is possible to have a two-world experience when one can meet people who speak, think and behave differently. For instance, after I moved to the United States, I realized that teachers are very friendly to their students here and I even made friends with my high school teachers. This was a new experience for me because teachers in China are often very strict and student's respect for them is just to fear. All the other new experiences I have here in the United States will never be forgotten because they are such big changes in my life.
