For five days, I have been writing five things I am grateful for, through the day. Every night I looked back on the day and tried to think of the great and small things to be grateful for. This helped me realize I had a lot to be grateful for. I pass by everyday not thinking about it, but just going by it as if it was just another boring day. The concept of gratitude is very relevant to the end of "Our Town". As the spirits are talking about people and their actions towards life.
In "Our Town" Emily has died from failure in child birth. She is brought into the spirit world and is shown the reality of life. She goes to the least important day of her life and is so furious and heart broken about how she lived that day. She hated not slowing down, cherishing every moment, and not being grateful for the little things.
This project helped us do what Emily hated not doing. It helps us slow down a bit and look back on our day to realize and appreciate what we have. The book reminds us that life is too short and too fast to be going by as if it does not matter. It shows you you should not dwell on the past and look for possibilities in the future. The reactions of a spirit to the actions of a human dwelling on the past is shocking, to them, because the spirits have learned the meaning of true happiness in life because theirs is over. They know, now that their life as a human is over, that distractions from the most important things in life, like love and just normal daily life, is what is keeping you from having a good life, and cherishing the significant events.
The concepts of gratitude is shown all through the story, "Our Town". Although the theme is not present till the very end, the whole story is telling insignificant moments in life and great moments in life you should be grateful for. Just like the ones we mention in our daily journals.
