29 a day, struggling with a failing infrastructure and chronic fuel shortages because of a lack of petrol refining capacity, even though it produces more crude oil than Texas. theres been arguments that Nigeria is a third world country and they should get more assistance from the more develop countries such as the G20 countries, well Nigeria has received $400 billion (257 billion) in aid six times what the U.S. pumped into reconstructing the whole of Western Europe after World War II. Now the question is after all those amount of money, why is the country still poor, what has all the money been used for? The answer is that the money has been used for and used by the government on themselves. The huge flow of oil wealth means the government does not rely on taxpayers for its income, so does not have to answer to the people a situation that fosters rampant corruption and economic sclerosis because there is no investment in infrastructure as the countrys leaders cream off its wealth. And this situation has led to the country being one of the most corrupt country in the world.
Nigeria is ranked 36 as the most corrupt country in the world according to Transparency International (the global coalition against corruption) index of corruption. First of all corruption can be define as dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery as well as the action or effect of making someone or something morally depraved. Corruption in Nigeria is endemic from parents bribing teachers to get hold of exam papers for their children through policemen taking money for turning a blind eye and to the leaders (government) essentially swindling the nation of its resources. The rise of public administration and the discovery of petroleum and natural gas are two major events seen to have led to a litany of ignoble corrupt practices in the country. The Nigerian government, stack all the money the country is making, and store them in foreign accounts, so people or anti corrupt officials (EFCC) cant detect their corrupt act.
