Leadership - Having the "Right Stuff'

            Leadership is a word that people use to describe a person that leads a group of people or and organization. What really gives people the right to lead? John C. Maxwell breaks leadership qualities down into seven different ways people can lead. Leadership is not something that comes easy or is just handed over because it is so easy to do. People in leadership positions are put there because they have earned the right to lead. .
             The first of the seven leadership qualities that Maxwell talks about in his book is a leader willing to act. Action is a very important quality to have when you are in a role of leadership. A story that Maxwell shares in his book is one of a General in Vietnam who saved a young soldiers life because he decided to act. Even though it was more dangerous for him to help the young man, the General saved his life because he decided to act on the situation (Maxwell 14). For a less dramatic example let's take the sport of baseball. If you are going into practice to work on your swing you don't want a coach that has never swung a bat because he doesn't have a clue on how to swing a bat. you want a coach that was a successful hitter when he did play the game and can visually show you how to hit. No matter if its a General saving a soldiers life or a coach showing you how to swing a bat. A leader that acts like a leader will have a army or team behind them. .
             The second quality that Maxwell talks about is a leader that have a vision. For his example Maxwell uses Nelson Mandela. Mandela grew up as a farm boy in South Africa but hearing about the liberation as a child gave him the vision that he wanted to fight for blacks in South Africa and the way they were treated. It took Mandela 75 years to become the president of South Africa but he never took his eyes off the vision he had to leave his mark on history (Maxwell 33). A leader with a vision for his team or teammates in sports is a very good quality to have.
