Speech Review

The lighting left a lot to be desired so the garage door was left cracked when the projector was not in use. Although it was about one hundred and five degrees outside it was impossible to tell since there was an overactive and very loud air-conditioning unit in use. The audience or students were all between the ages of eighteen to twenty five and had all recently completed the core motorcycle program at the school and had been in class together throughout their training.
Jon was a new instructor but had obviously been practicing somewhat, although I was unsure of how comfortable he actually was he made a great effort to appear that way. He began with a great personal introduction and demonstrated very attractive paralinguistic features throughout his presentation. He also spoke to the individuals in the audience as opposed to just at them as a whole. I also appreciated the way he moved around the group not just hiding or speaking from one point in the room. When Jon demonstrated a system he was familiar with he was very comfortable made sure that what he was doing was not only observed but understood. He spoke with a great sense of personality and had a positive additude that carried throughout his lesson.
Although Jon had demonstrated some non-verbal strengths throughout his presentation he did have some non-verbal weaknessess that would benefit from some attention. It was clear to the audience that Jon was unfamiliar with his specific environment. He had trouble with the computer and projector operation to the point of actually having to have to abandon certain parts of his presentation or lesson plan. Another noticeable non-verbal weakness was his lack of confidence when explaining a system which he was still learning himself. He just had a look of confusion on his face when reading the material. Jon also clicked his marker a lot which could get annoying at times but in my opinion did not cause much of a problem.
