The Future of Canadian Baseball

The history of baseball in Canada dates back to the beginning of baseball in the United States. However, a professional team did not become established in the Great White North until 1969 with the creation of the Montreal Expos and then again in 1977 with the Toronto Blue Jays. Then with the failing of the Expos they were shipped off to Washington D.C. at the start of the 2004 season. Many people ask the question if baseball will actually continue to succeed in Canada with only  two professional teams left in it(Toronto Blue Jays and Vancouver Canadians) after decades with many at all levels. Evidence shows that the answer to this question is: no, there will not be professional baseball in Canada in twenty years. The reasons behind this include: the lack of fan support for the remaining teams, the popularity of other sports in Canada, and .
In the early to mid 90s the support for Canadian baseball was its highest when the unexpected Blue Jays went on to win back to back world titles in the '92 ad '93 seasons. Baseball in Canada couldn't have been better, all the support for the Blue Jays and the Expos; who weren't to shabby either. However, since those two world titles the baseball experience up north has been on the steep decline. The Blue Jays have posted many losing seasons since then and even this season when leading the American League East for most of the first half of the season there was still many empty seats in their ballpark. According to Baseball Reference the Blue Jays were first in attendance in the whole American League in the five years between 1989 and 1994. However, since 1998 they have only been in the top half of the American League attendances twice.  For the Expos, from 1998 to 2004 when they left for our nations capital they only totaled over a million total fans once when the league average fans was over two million. It's definitely safe to say that the fan support for Canadian baseball teams was and still is on the decline in the last fifteen years.
