Inequality and discrimination have always been issues in our society. Although we try and fight it, everywhere we look in the world, there will be some form of discrimination. There will always be people that think they are better than another purely because of their race, way of life, or family background. However, through all of this adversity, there has been someone to shine the light and lead the discriminated to a better future. Such a hero can be hard to find in such difficult times, but luckily he did exist throughout the Indian Independence movement. Mahatma Gandhi lead this movement, helped the indian population reclaim their natural born rights, and created his own way of life through it all. .
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, India. He was the youngest child in his family. His father, Karamchand Gandhi was, at the time, married to Putlibai who was the mother of Gandhi. Throughout his school career, Gandhi was a mediocre student and was very shy and self-spoken. He was an obedient child, but rebelled against his Hindu religion by eating meat, smoking and even stealing. At age 13 he had an arranged marriage with a girl named Kasturba. She gave him four sons. By age 18 he knew that he wanted to pursue a law career and headed off to London to try and become an attorney. When he first arrived in London, he attempted to turn himself into a fine English gentleman, by participating in a variety of expensive endeavors such as dance lessons, buying fine suits, and taking violin lessons. Before long, he realized that these actions were a waste of time and money. He then stopped attending these classes and buying lavish items and became a serious student with a simple lifestyle. During his college years he discovered his passion for vegetarianism and joined the London Vegetarianism Society. He also started to read the Bhagavad Gita, which is considered to be the sacred text of Hindus.
