Mexico and Haiti - The Road to Independence

However, the conditions in Haiti were different from the ones in Mexico. The Haitian slaves compromised 90% of the entire population, and they faced brutal living conditions followed by hard work in the plantations. Even though they were almost the majority of the population, the slaves did not have any rights. The "grand blancs" could treat them as they pleased, and the slaves were fed up by the kind of life that they were being forced to live. On the other hand, the Mexican revolution was led by those who had Spanish blood in them but were born in Mexico, called Creoles. This social class along with the Mestizos (descendent from a Spaniard and an Indigenous) had built up anger from being ignored by the "original" Spaniards or "Peninsulares".
All in all, the unfair division of the political structure and rights in both colonies was the main cause of the burst of revolutions. But what made possible the independence of these two colonies had direct relation with the way each settlement organized itself. .
In spite of the similar factors in the beginning of the dramatic changes, the actions that were taken by the leaders and armies in Haiti and Mexico to hold an independence movement can be discussed due to the divergence that they share. The Haitian independence movement can be described as spontaneous. The general Toussaint L'Ouverture organized the slaves into a large army that was willing to fight barehanded for their freedom. The rebellion plan was majorly organized in a physical way, through battle, rather than in a written method or in a meeting strategy. On the other end, the Mexican independence movement was organized by Father Miguel Hidalgo, Juan Aldama, Ignacio Allende, and Josefa Ortíz de Domínguez. These people held several meetings to plan the revolution, they gathered at the Alondiga de Granaditas to plan the independence revolutions. .
The Haitian revolution had a very particular aspect that characterized it as the first successful slave rebellion.
