"It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed " (Bradbury 3). Guy Montag, the main character, has a very certain job. He is a firefighter that gets paid to set things on fire. Moreover, the ˜things' that he sets on fire are books and 451 is the temperature at which books burn. Guy is not content on setting books on fire though, not after he meets Clarisse McClellan. Clarisse is a seventeen year old girl that has moved in next door with her family. Clarisse sees the world differently. Instead of focusing on things that make her happy, like everyone else in the suburban city, Clarisse focuses on nature and the world. After talking to Guy, Guy starts realizing how his life and the world really are and tries to change. The theme of Fahrenheit 451 is that censorship isn't always helpful since it destroyed Guy's marriage, it made every one alike, and it eventually killed everyone.
First of all, censorship caused Guy's marriage to crumble. His wife is Mildred "Millie " Montag and she is perfectly fine with the way their lives are. When Guy starts changing and tries to tell her about it, she freaks, "'See what you're doing? You'll ruin us! Who's more important, me or that Bible?' " (Bradbury 76). Guy wanted to share his newfound love for books and knowledge, but Millie wants nothing to do with it. Since it is against the law, she's really panicked about what will happen to then if Guy is to be found out. Another time when censorship has ruined their marriage is when Guy ask Millie if she remembers how they met and she can't remember and says, "'Funny, how funny, not to remember where you met your husband'r wife. It doesn't matter' " (Bradbury 43). For them, it doesn't matter how long you have been together or how you met. Censorship has costs the people to think in small doses where they don't even remember important things like marriage.
Secondly, censorship has made everyone think alike.
