Being a Texan can bring to mind many different things, from something as little as using a specific word to generalize a group of people; to something as big as saying every single Texan is an oil burning Hill-Billy. I want to focus more on the positive aspect of Texas, such as being able to choose everything and anything that goes into the governing body of Texas. In theory, being able to have a say in every single aspect of the governing body that makes and enforce laws that rule over your life sounds pretty good. At least that is what the creators of the Texas constitution thought. Texans decided to move away from the political powers being controlled by a few political elites to having every single action in politics being decided by the people themselves. It might have been a good idea at the time, but as time goes on we start to see that people now a days just do not have enough time or will power to know every little thing that is happening with the government; giving them so many options ultimately led to the decrease of participation in elections; the exact opposite of what the makers of the Texas constitution were aiming for.
Giving so many options to choose form for so many different positions in government is not the only thing that has diminished the total outcome of voting in Texas. Many people feel like Texas is just a state where one party has always represented them and think that since it has been like this for such a long time then their voices would not make a big enough difference to matter. According to Saul Elbein "If Texas [minorities] participated in politics at the same rates" that the Anglo-Americans do, Texas would already be a swing state. (observer). Texas is rapidly becoming a state were the minorities become the majority, seeing that for the moment mostly Anglo-American republicans are the ones in power; The direction of the government in Texas is surely to change if the minorities, which tend to lean on the democratic party, start going more to the polls.
