Socioeconomic Status and Parenting Styles

             Literature Review.
             SES and Child Development.
As we were looking through research we can not help but to find research that focuses on a child's outcome based on their socioeconomic status. There seems to be a longitudinal influence within children depending on what type of SES they grew up with. "Income, education, and occupational status are sometimes used together as indicators of SES and also as separate variables in data analyses so that investigators can evaluate their unique, additive contributions to family characteristics and human development." (Conger, J.Conger & Martin, 2010). In some cases, earlier education can even be used as a predictor of later income and work success. Now a days programs like Head Start are said to make significant changes in a childs development. "Head Start is a national program administered by the Head Start Bureau within the Administration on Children, Youth and Families, Administration for Children and Families (ACF), and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Head Start provides comprehensive developmental services for low-income children from birth to entry into elementary school."( U.S. Benefits, 2014). This helps root down to the parents involvement and even further down to what SES were they in; that in which allowed or may have not allowed them to participate in this program. .
Parental Parenting Styles and Low SES.
Previous studies have shown that parental parenting styles have significant influence on children's future physical/mental development, learning, and life adaptation. Studies show that parents in lower SES tend toward a more authoritarian or rigid style of parenting. "The stressors that accompany lower economic status have been shown to negatively influence the emotional resources of the parent leading to less responsive, more punitive parenting." (Stambler & Media, 2008) Because of this children are often negatively affected and are less likely to succeed in.
