In 1492 Christopher Columbus, looking for new land, discovered the Americas. Along with him came English settlers who attained the perspective of manifest destiny. The settlers used this mindset to force American Natives to southeastern North America, where many Natives died from starvation, exposure, and disease. The Americans of the fifteenth century committed genocide and destroyed cultures by forcing the Natives to their deaths. As time continued to move America began to advance in population and technology. Today, a common pass time could be watching VH1's Real Housewives of Atlanta flaunt their money for an hour. It is media like this that have taught Americans that having money guarantees happiness. Based this misconstrued perspective that attaining materialistic wealth prompts happiness, the Americans of today can be defined as having little sense of culture, and a lack of self-fulfillment and global awareness. .
Many Americans today lack a sense of their native culture. Culture is not something that should be lost, it can only be taken away through assimilation. The only way Natives could avoid the voyage to southeastern North America was to assimilate to European culture. Thus, they lost their own heritage. Natives were not the only ones to suffer loss, many immigrants lost their heritage to enter the world of golden opportunities. In order to enter the states through Ellis Island, immigrants were examined on their ability to speak the English language and their knowledge of American customs. Today, many descendants of those immigrants have lost their cultures. Especially when entering the world of corporate America, non-Americans must be perceived as American in exchange for promotion. Ask a black man about his roots. Does he remember the soil his ancestors walked on? Ask a white man about where his great great grandparents lived. Were they European or Russian? Ask any mother what her grandmother celebrated before they knew about Christmas? There is a tug of war within America that forces foreign cultures to become inconspicuous.
