I believe that because of the development of multiculturalism, it helps people to increase their knowledge of the world. It is a good thing since it brings benefits to every society. People can enjoy eating different types of cultural foods, for example Chinese foods, and learn different kind of perspectives from other people. So then kids learn to grow up in this environment where they accept different perspectives, values, and behaviors without any trouble. The world is one global community. On the other hand, I realized that not many people see this perspective because they believe their culture's values are superior.
Recently I read this article named "On Columbus Day, Celebrate Western Civilization, Not Multiculturalism" by Michael Berliner. He basically supports Christopher Columbus's achievements. He also states that it was Columbus who brought America to the attention of the civilized world. Before he came, the place was undeveloped and uninhabited. It was his discovery that caused the place to become developed and inhabited, and also civilized. However, one thing that I don't like in this article is that he said that we should honor Western civilization because we might have European ancestors. I thought America back then practiced holocaust in order to expand their civilization from east to west, this is where manifest destiny came in. There's a dark history behind America's achievement, but many American left it out of their history. According to Berliner, Western civilization is the best in the world. On the other hand, I do agree with him that it was Columbus who discovered America and brought it to attention, but he wasn't the first person to discover it. I feel that he has a narrow view on the world, and maybe he's just like any typical American who think their country and culture is above everyone's. .
In contrast, there's a book named A Different Mirror: a History of Multicultural America by Ronald Takaki that tells America's history in a unique voice, from a minority side.
