Gay Representations on Television: Glee and Modern Family

Their relationship is in many ways groundbreaking, but that does not mean that their portayal does not have some issues. Firstly, their public display of affection was limited to minimum. The best example would probably be the episode žAsian F" from the second season of the show. While most of the heterosexual pairings kissed freely in the hallways, Kurt and Blaine were limited to sharing flowers and hugging. They visibly held back from kissing in the hallway, since Kurt had already suffered from gay bashing at school and it would have been twice as horrible with two openly gay kids. In their case, the lack of PDA is justified, since they are young, still in high school and both have suffered from bullying before. Modern Family on the other hand, is a sitcom about three families, who are all connected to each other in one way or another. Through the documentary-like style, the show draws humorous lives of the three related families (HJ 2013). The show also features many different characters, including Cameron Tucker and Mitchell Pritchett, who are partners. One of the main issues with this pairing was that they did not show any public display of affection. In their case, it was not about other people being judgemental or them being afraid of the bullying: Mitchell simply did not like PDA. The issue is brought up in the episode The Kiss. As the episode goes on, it is revealed that Mitchell's aversion to kissing in public is due to Jay, his father, being emotionally closed off. In order to resolve the problem, Jay first kissed Mitchell, his son and then it was shown that Mitchell and his partner Cameron, also finally kiss. The similarities between the two couples and two television shows are visible, but this particular case has some major differences. For example, Kurt and Blaine are not afraid to kiss, but they choose not to do this in their high school hallway, since there might be bullies around, but Mitchell does not want to kiss his partner in public because he has some personal issues regarding public display affection.
