Advertising Men's Cologne

Have you ever wondered how certain companies get you to buy their products just through an advertisement? Companies use very different appeals to attract the attention they need to get a certain group to buy that particular product. Cologne is an item that uses many different appeals to reach their target audiences. That could be through a sex appeal or an appeal such as an endorsement appeal. These appeals could even coincide with one another. I have taken two cologne ads one from ESPN magazine and the other from the Cosmopolitan magazine. Although the ads are alike in some ways such as they use a few of the same appeals and the fact that they are trying to sell to men. However, they also have completely different approaches for instance how they portray their products and the type of men they are trying to sell too.
First off, lets talk about their differences. I will start off with how they portray their product. This meaning what the ad looks like as a visual component. The ESPN ad is for a cologne called Drakkar Essence by Guy Lande. In this ad there is an NFL quarter back named Cam Newton standing in his shoulder pads. The shot of this picture is taken from is the waist up. to the right of Newton's picture is the photo of the bottle of cologne with the in big white letters "DRAKKAR ESSENCE" and under that it reads, "Guy Lande." Below the bottle there is another series of words that reads, " The new fragrance for men," "FEEL THE POWER," and "#showyourpower. .
In the second ad, there is a guy standing up against a wall with a suit on, and his top buttons are undone. There is also a naked woman in his arm. The guy's hand is placed on her lower back and she is reaching up with her lips as if she were going to kiss him on the cheek or forehead. Her hand is gently placed on his chest. The bottle of cologne is on the bottom left of the page; with the word "RevealCalvinKlein" on it.
