Three Main Symbols in The Lottery


            The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is a story of a small town and all the villagers, in which there are many symbols present. These symbols in the story can be interpreted however you want to interpret them. Also may of these symbols can have multiple meanings; they don't just symbolize one thing in particular. Any person can have their own personal opinion on what they think that the symbols really mean. The story can be interpreted however you want to interpret all of the symbols that are used in it. Overall The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is full of symbols and symbolism; including the black box, the three legged stool, and the stones. .
             One example of a symbol in the story is the black box that the villagers draw their slips of paper out of. This box represents the tradition of the lottery, it is old and falling apart but the villagers will not replace it no matter what. The box can't be replaced because the villagers don't want to break their tradition in fear that it would upset their god. Also the black box can symbolize death and darkness. It symbolizes death because it eventually causes the death of an individual in the village every year. All the villagers know that there is one slip of paper in the black box which has a black circle on it. The person who has the misfortune of drawing this slip, will the villager that is stoned to death.
             Another great example of symbolism in the story is the three legs of the stool that is used to hold up the black box. These three legs symbolize the Christian Trinity; God the Father, God the Sun, and God the Holy Spirit. One way the three legged stool is symbolic is because the Holy Trinity is connected to god, and the villager's god played an important role in their lives. In the story, the villagers believe that they have to follow the tradition set before them or they wouldn't receive a good harvest. It was commonly believed that if the villagers continued the tradition of the lottery, and sacrificed someone, their god would reward them with a bountiful harvest.
