Writing to Unite the Races

In 1894, if she would have taken a more militant stance it would have been easy for whites to dismiss her logic as bias due to her "black disposition". The idea of taking a less offensive stance in order to convince another party of your logic is an age old method of persuasion that Wells is able to yield masterfully in "A Red Record".
Ida B. Wells understood the idea that it is much easier to show people inconsistencies in another culture than it is to show them problems within their own. Wells wrote this article in 1894, and at this point there was lynching going on all over the country. As a black woman she clearly would have been aware of violent racism in both the North and South and she could have easily lumped the Northern states in her argument. Wells chose to make it about the south because judging the ugliness of the southern social system put her and the reader on the same team in a sense. Instead of bashing the reader she made it so her and the reader were able to bash the ideologies of the south based on their common desire for an unwavering American justice. She made it a point to highlight the ideological differences between the north and the south because she wanted to make the argument as much about ideas and as little about skin color as possible. She talked thankfully about white women of the North coming and teaching blacks during reconstruction. "From every nook and corner of the North, brave young white women answered the call . and went to the south to carry light and truth to the benighted blacks". Then, she talked about how southern whites even despised northerners of their own race based on their different views. "No chivalrous white man doffed his hat in honor or respect. They were "nigger teachers", unpardonable offenders in the social ethics of the south". She implied that southern whites' desire to keep black people down actually trumped their love for their own race and makes them hate northern whites who try to help blacks.
