You choose what you want to believe in. Yet others who believe in something different than what you believe in there are an issue. But let a homosexual try to believe in the same religion as you all of a sudden there is a huge problem. And this is why I agree with the statement marriage may be religious issue for the fact is; we also have civil marriage, which has absolutely nothing to do with religion. (James 2).
But, I disagree with James when he states, Religious groups and churches have every right to deny same sex marriage in their parish, but they have absolutely no right to deny it in city hall (James 2). Many people have their own opinions about religion and what to believe in as well as what not to believe in and yet the government says nothing about it, they have absolutely no control over what one believes in. So, why do they get to have control over homosexuals being able to marry one another? If we as citizens are supposed to have freedom of speech and equality, what is the real issue? In a city hall it is not religious. So does this mean the homosexuals who wish to marry their partner have the right to go to a city hall? No they still cannot marry. Why? Who says that gays dont love the same? That they dont have the same feelings as a normal married couple share? Homosexuals and lesbians are tax-paying, law abiding citizens and deserve the same rights and legal protections as every other citizen of the United States (James 3). In other words, they get treated unequally when they have to abide by the same exact laws as heterosexual person. If we thought of marriage the way we did 35 years ago, gay marriage would seem to us just as impossible as it seemed then (Lakoff 119). The world has changed drastically since 35 years ago. Marriage 35 years ago was tough on straight people. Due to the fact that traditions were tougher then as well. Thirty-five years later traditions have changed, everything is less strict.
