Movie Summary: Culture in Bend It Like Beckham


            Bend It Like Beckham is a movie about Punjabi Sikhs daughter who is 18years old and lives in London. This girl is crazy about playing football but her parents have banned her to play it because she is a girl. Jesminder joins a local women's team that was making its way to the top of the league. Bend It Like Beckham has won the compliment from both moviegoers and critics and for portraying the reality of Asian and Indian culture. Jesminder had to decide whether to pursue her dream of playing football or respect her parent's wish which is to attend University and get married. The cultural Identity can be well-defined as our belonging to a specific cultural or ethnic group and the movie shows us that Jesminder struggles to determine her own cultural identity by discovering the key themes of race, religion, and gender.
             The movie showed and portrayed the Indian culture through the Sikh religious beliefs, dress and cuisine, the importance ritual, and the traditional role of women. Jesminder didn't like participating in some of traditional aspects of the culture, but she understands that her family pushes her to this direction because it is what should be done. The movie was all about portraying Indian culture through religion that plays a significant role in Sikh religion and engaging rituals and prayers into daily life. Jesminder's mother for example was portrayed most of the time praying. On the other hand, Jesminder has a picture of her idol in her room, who is the football player David Beckham. In the movie Jesminder was portrayed while she was talking to the picture of David and telling him things about her life.
             Since clothing is a very important element of each culture, clothing in the Sikh culture is a symbol of faith. "Sikh believers wear symbols of their commitment to their faith, including a metal bracelet and a small ceremonial dagger, and have uncut hair, which men keep covered with a turban.
