Case Study - Three Year Old Boy

Their case with HHS has since closed out, but both of the children were verified with developmental delay and have been working with an early childhood special education teacher and a services coordinator in the home. Their mother has experienced mental instability, going through bouts of depression and anxiety related to issues in her past as a child who was in and out of foster care herself. I believe that some of the social/emotion disconnect that was first observed with Dylan and his mother about a year ago stems from some of these issues from her past and her inability to maintain strong, meaningful relationships with others. Dylan was about 15 months old when his mother became pregnant with his sister, but she claims she didn't know she was pregnant until she was having the baby nine months later. She went to the hospital thinking she had appendicitis and was told she was in labor. From the time Lyla was born, her mother had a hard time coping with having another child unexpectedly and it wasn't until Lyla was about 15 months old that someone finally noticed that Dylan and Lyla's parents needed some help with their parenting skills. That is when HHS was brought in, and also why we continue to work with this family today. .
While observing Dylan in his daily routine and speaking with his parents about his growing developments, his physical, cognitive, language and social/emotional developments have been noted. There is a focus on many aspects of these different developmental areas through his life in the infancy and toddlerhood stages. Through observation of these developmental areas, it is evident that Dylan is a growing toddler transitioning into a preschooler who is making great strides as far as developing on time. He is progressing in all areas of development and he is very comparable to that of an average developing child in most of the areas observed, while he seems to be behind in others.
