Standards of Beauty in South Korea

Majority of people, regardless of our declared outlooks, prefer to buy from better-looking salespeople, as jurors to listen to better-looking attorneys, as voters to be led by better-looking politicians, as students to learn from better-looking professors. (Griffin, Angela M ) According to many economists and other researchers, being beautiful is considered useful because it helps women earn more money, find a higher earning. (Hamermesh, Daniel S. ) But, even though majority of people are against discrimination based on an appearance, society continues to shout "start being beautiful" ( Kershaw, Sarah ) .
             As compared to other countries, South Korea is extremely concerned with Beauty Standard because South Korean women today live in an environment in which looks are of supreme importance, social support is low, and pressure to achieve the cultural ideals of attractiveness is high.              often involved with low self-esteem and unhealthy female behavior, that's why today cosmetic surgery is far more common because of 'fear of ugliness'. ( Meyer, Haley M. ) One in five Korean women in Seoul, capital of South Korea, chooses to undergo elective cosmetic surgery. Idealized images of beautiful Korean idols are a major factor, affecting unattractive Korean women's personal ideals and body image. By imitating to a false pretense of a 'Korean beauty', these Korean women bury themselves in their own culture and their own identities. (The Alphabetization of Korean Women's Body Types) Shockingly, even the Peers and family members encourage these young women to pay attention to their appearance, which causes them to have a social and a personal issue, such as the desire to be considered beautiful at all times; which influences them to compare themselves to the models in fashion magazines such as Korean actor/actress, and a continuous cycle of negativity and self-loathing feeling.
