In George Orwell's book, "Nineteen Eighty-Four," he brings to life a world in which everyone is constantly being watched by higher authorities. A world that in one's opinion, might seem so diverse from the one humanity lives in today. Is it possible that Winston's life, as he knows of, can become reality and if so, how long before its corruption? Reality, in it's own way, already is corrupt and going in a downward spiral. The world George Orwell gave warning about might not be real, yet it's not far from being possible.
The Party in, "Nineteen Eighty-Four," continued to produce atomic bombs and store them, so that they could easily kill thousands of people instantly. This idea is quite common in today's society. Although, hopefully, the government plans to use it against other countries during war and not for it's own citizens. In order to deter potential adversaries and to safeguard citizens and allies, the United States on average spends twenty billion dollars per year on nuclear arsenal. Also, the U.S. estimates to spend one hundred and seventy-nine billion dollars for the years of 2010 to 2018, which includes most of the direct costs of nuclear weapons and strategic launchers. Since September 2013, the total number of nuclear warheads the United States is calculated to have is 4,804, including tactical, strategic, and non-deployed weapons.
As mentioned, the United States is known for it's strong government and great defense system, but maybe the freedom the U.S. is known for, will one day become trampled on by some foreign invader. In the book, the Party was constantly afraid of being attacked by one of it's opponents. The thought of losing their power was unimaginable. Even today there is war to either keep power, or to gain power. Power is a constant yearning that everyone hopes to have. To have complete control over another human being without any form punishment is sensational. With the way the world is today, the cycle is going to keep on repeating itself.
