A child who is picked on at school for having same-sex parents will lead a different lifestyle than a child who is picked on for their appearance. Most people will grow into new images or can change them with makeup or maturity, as to parenting, the child can not choose a parent. This does not mean that same-sex couples should not adopt but instead the couples should find better ways to help their child cope with the issues arising in such settings. It is unsure how data would be affected should the reason for children's squabbles be separate from the family issues. So as to whether children in same-sex marriages would be a convincible argument so far is invalid with little and biased data.
Another argument that is used to argue the legalization of marriage for same-sex couples is that of religion. Gerald Schlabach theological professor at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota digs in depth into the Christian bible, which is the most common source for use of disagreement, that same-sex marriage was the compromise of Paul in 1 Corinthians 7 which states that it's better to marry than live with sexual desires. Furthermore, he claims that according to Paul, marriage isn't the indispensable value that churches make it out to be but a second best. He also claims that marriage wasn't for protection or even the care of children but to fulfil sexual desires based on scripture and time period. If one is to promote their ideologies based upon written works, they have to take into consideration the whole text. Another part that would seem to continuously pop up is that of tolerance. As with children, more tolerant parents create more tolerant children who lessen the load for a homosexual couples child, the same goes for religion. Valerie Schultz, avid Catholic, claims that the way churches are handling "the ˜gay thing' " isn't right. She is the mother of a lesbian daughter as well as three other daughters not homosexual and did not realize her daughters sexual preference until her daughter's freshman year of college when she told her.
