The idea of confusion in identity is explored in the short story "on the sidewalk bleeding" as a representation of andy who chooses to have an identity in a gang; the Royals. this impacts him not only for what society judges him for, but the end result of death and struggles of setting his true identity free. The confusion of identity is shown before the start of the story where Andy gets stabbed and is obviously on the sidewalk bleeding. The people who stabbed him knew him for his gang, the Royals and not andy himself. "Thats for you Royal!" this quote shows that the stabbers had something against his gang and not Andy which goes back to the idea of confusion in identity. This triggers an emotion in Andy and sets a realization goal in his head that he wants to be more than a label on his jacket. This refers back to society nowadays as labelling seems to be a common threat to individuality because of media pressure of perfection.
When andy realizes that it is too late, he regrets not choosing his own individual path, but instead is peer pressured to be socially compatible which leads him to make the decision to join a gang to fill his social needs. He is quoted saying "someday i would marry Laura and we would have lots of kids". He says this because he still recognizes himself as an individual human being with hopes and dreams. But unfortunately the people in the text do not see I'm as an individual, but just another "royal" (how he is seen pushed around?) pawn being pushed around and manipulated by the "royal" kingpin. Young people of todays society can learn from Andy's point of view, to treasure our moments to the fullest and cherish those around us, as we learn that everyone has an identity with hopes and dreams that can easily be taken away from them. Without our identity, we would be lost, just like Andy.
The couple in the text is an example of people in society judging individuals by their labels are not their true self.
