The Neurovascular Disease and Stroke

             Epidemiology.
Within the US, nearly 800,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke each year, this means that a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the US and someone dies of a stroke every 4 minutes. Stroke is also the leading cause of adult disability and up to 80 percent of strokes can be prevented. Stroke can affect anyone at anytime but is more common in adults and the elderly as they exhibit many of the risk factors. Risk of stroke is increased if there is a history of stroke in your family.
             Chromosomes/Genes Involved.
There is not much research that links chromosomal variations to increased risk of stroke. However, recent research performed by the Department of Neurology at the Ludwig-Maximillians-Universitat, in Munich Germany has demonstrated a correlation between ischemic stroke and sequence variants on chromosome 9. Their findings indicate that chromosome 9 is a major risk area for the causation of stroke independent of other risk factors. .
             Risk Factors .
Stroke can happen to anyone at any time, that being said, there are certain risk factors that increase your chances of having a stroke. The single most important risk factor of stroke is age. There are other conditions that increase your risk of stroke, including, previous stroke or TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack or "mini stroke "). High blood pressure and high cholesterol are also major risk factors for stroke as both increase the risk of the formation of clots and blood vessel blockages. Common heart disorders can also increase you risk for stroke. For instance, coronary artery disease causes plaque build up in arteries and could potentially block blood flow to the brain. Diabetes also increases an individual's risk of stroke as is causes sugars to build up in the blood and again could block important arteries to the brain. Sickle cell disease is another potential risk factor as a sickle cell could get stuck in a blood vessel and block the flow of blood to the brain.
