The Jesuits and the First Nations in Canada

The Society of Jesus, more commonly known as the Jesuits, is a society within the Roman Catholic Church that was founded in 1540 by Ignatius of Loyola and instituted by Pope Paul III. The Jesuits Main goal in the 17th century were to convert the First Nations into Jesuits. If the First Nations were to become Jesuits, it would have a significant negative effect. The Jesuits brought a negative impact to the First Nations people by converting them into Jesuits, bringing diseases, and making native warfare deadlier. The Jesuits' main goal in the 17th century was to to convert Aboriginals into Jesuits: "It is on such dispositions and foundations that we hope, with the grace of God, to build the edifice of the Christian Religion among these people" (Cramoisy 5). The Jesuits think that everyone must follow their religion, they did not realize that their religion had a negative impact on the Huron people. If the Huron were to be converted, they would not be able to defend themselves from the Iroquois because it is a sin to kill someone. This would make it hard for the Algonquin people to survive. The Jesuits did not care whether or not they would be killed by the Iroquois because in their religion, they believed that if you were a Jesuit or converted to one, you would go to heaven. .
Not only did the Jesuits bring their religion to Canada, they brought illnesses and diseases that the Indigenous people could not withstand. One disease that killed the majority of First Nation people was smallpox. Smallpox is a disease that causes rashes on the skin and inflated blisters. The First Nations people did not know how to treat this disease causing many of them to die. The Jesuits told the First Nations people that if they were to let them convert to Jesuits, their diseases would disappear but the the First Nations did not realize that the diseases came from the Jesuits. This decreased the population of the First Nations all around Canada.
