How A Historian Got Caught Up In Poetry

e. poet and historian). The title of being known as a 'poet' means to expect a type of fluidness that can be sure to include some exaggerations for maintaining the fluidity and storytelling in writing. When the audience is aware that the author is an 'historian' writing of the Persian War, to include events leading up to the war, it is natural to expect an amount of trust in the author for accuracy and prior research of sources to ensure a scholarly tone in delivering their research, and convincing the audience the events did indeed occur. This is just a small example to provide a pretext to understanding on a greater scale the differences and similarities in how these works are studied by historians. This essay will focus on the differences and similarities of both literary works for the portrayal of Greek soldiers and leaders in both writings.
One of the differences, between the two writings in its discussion of Greek soldiers and leaders, was the involvement of the gods. In The Iliad, the gods were clearly known to be anthropomorphic and were involved in human conflicts (to include battles and wars), and even more so, with the Greek military and political leaders. In The Histories, however, Herodotus does not emphasize the involvement of the gods in military affairs like Homer does, and instead focuses on the human actions of the conflicts and wars that occurred during the Persian Wars. Another difference between the two was the leadership of the Greeks. Homer writes about Achilles being god-like as a warrior and leader, whereas, Herodotus describes Leonidas as a great warrior and leader without making any reference to god-like characteristics. However, while the two writings differ in the characteristic description of both leaders, Achilles and Leonidas, Homer and Herodotus depict both leaders to be heroes and deserving of honor and glory. Here there are comparisons and contrasts to be found for Greek soldiers and leaders when reading Homer's The Iliad and Herodotus' The Histories.
