Julia wears a sash belonging to the "Anti-Sex League", He recognizes these people as being the most unbearable party members to accompany. Once Winston and Julia being to have intercourse in secret, he begins to depend on the sexual relief she provides for him: "The smell of her hair, the taste of her mouth, the feeling of her skin seemed to have got inside him, or into the air all around him. She had become a physical necessity" (Orwell, 140). Throughout the novel, Winston and Julia have sexual intercourse a number of times in different environments to ensure they do not get caught. There are many instances of this novels prohibition in schools, including: "Jackson County, Florida challenged the novel in 1981 claiming to be pro-communism and anti-Semitism and for having sexual references" (squidoo).
Secondly, the graphic violence in the novel played a large role in its controversy. The graphic description of torture and public execution is seen throughout the novel. "Rocket bombs" launched by the enemies of Oceania (either Eurasia or Eastasia, changes several times in the novel) kill dozens of people at a time in Air Strip One without the attention of any citizens, they see it as a completely regular occurrence, at one point in the novel Winston nearly misses a rocket bomb but is knocked to his feet, when he returns to his senses he casually gets up and sees a severed hand on the ground. Without any thought he kicks the hand in the gutter, not feeling any kind of emotion for those who have just been killed meters away from him. "1984 is brutal and violent, but the people seem to enjoy that brutality. In the first pages, a group of moviegoers cheer after seeing a film of a boatload of children being bombed to pieces. Violence is part of their daily lives" (squidoo). All Party members are required to participate in the two minutes of hate, a public event in which a picture of "Goldeinstein", a traitor to Oceania is shown and they direct all their hate towards him.
