Sigmund Freud - Theories on Aggressive Behavior

In Sigmund Freud's book Civilization and Its Discontents we hear Freud discuss many different terms, from that of "ego" vs. "super ego", the "oceanic" feeling along with many others. Freud, who became known as the father of psychoanalysis, has written many books throughout history and one of his pieces of writing that always seem to come up is Civilization and Its Discontents. While there are many terms that Freud focuses on throughout his book, there are also many major themes in which Freud discusses. One of those themes is the act of aggression. Aggression as a broad term in Freudian theory is that it is human instinct to act aggressive towards one another. This does apply more towards the males as he says, "men are not gentle creatures who want to be loved, an who at the most can defend themselves if they are attacked; they are, on the contrary" (Freud, 94). Creon, in the tragedy Antigone, personifies this theme of aggression that Freud discusses throughout his book by the way he shows no remorse for his niece Antigone and sentences her to death for her actions that went against those of the gods. .
Freud discusses throughout his book that aggression is the fundamental instinct of all human beings and that we naturally are aggressive towards one another. "The commandment, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself', is the strongest defense against human aggressiveness and an excellent example of the un-psychological proceedings of the cultural super-ego." (Freud, 146). What Freud is alluding to in this passage in regards to operating in an individuals life is that it is impossible for a human to love somebody more than themselves. For Freud, who amongst his great writings has many statements in which people tend to disagree with what he believes. To make an assumption, since phycology, in one sense is a bunch of assumptions formed into one thought process, makes certain readers of Freud skeptical to his ideology.
